Thinking about a subject over and over again or repeating the same thing in the head or fearing what will happen for no reason happens to many people. Sometimes even a small matter is so much in the head that the mind is not able to do anything else. This is what we commonly call over thinking. Thinking is certainly not a bad thing. If there is a problem, you need to think about it and find a solution. But it can become annoying for us when thinking about the same thing again and again does not give any solution and instead the mind becomes more restless. In order to reduce excessive thinking, it is necessary to learn to understand the concept of your own thoughts.
First understand what you are really thinking about. Sometimes we just think that there are many thoughts going on in our head but we don’t understand what is making us so restless. Then you can easily ask yourself what I am really thinking about? If the cause is clear, it is also somewhat easier to deal with.
If the thing you are thinking about is within your control then you can make a small plan for it. Suppose you are thinking that you have to do some work tomorrow. In this case, just decide when to do the work, what will be needed and from where to start. You can take a real action instead of thinking about what to eat in your head.
And if it’s out of your control, there’s no use worrying about it again and again. Accepting that things won’t go our way often helps keep the mind calm.
Keeping yourself busy is an easy way to reduce overthinking. This does not mean immersing yourself in work all day. Instead, do something that takes your mind a little further. Cleaning the house, cooking, reading books, listening to music, going for a walk or doing any work of your choice can be done. When the mind is focused on one task, the chances of the same thought recurring are reduced.A walking habit can also work well for many. If you go outside for a little walk, the body moves and the mind feels a little lighter. It is not necessary to walk a lot every day. A short walk on your own time is also a good start.
Need to pay attention to sleep. If you don’t sleep properly, sometimes the mind becomes more restless and even small things can seem big. So it’s best to try to go to bed at roughly the same time every day if possible. If you have a habit of spending a long time on the phone before going to sleep, it can also be reduced a little. Many times we think about the future as if we can know for sure what will happen next.
But in reality, not everything about the future is known in advance. So what if that’s the case? What if something like that happens? Thinking about all the possible worst-case scenarios in this way can increase anxiety. Instead, you can say to yourself that if such a situation arises, I will try to handle it.
The way you talk to yourself is also important. When we make a mistake to someone else we may easily say no problem try again but we are often too hard on ourselves. I kept blaming myself for a mistake. So much extra thinking can add up. So try to take your mistakes as normal.
Writing down your thoughts on paper can also be helpful. Write down what’s on your mind instead of going over everything in your head. If you write down what you are afraid of, what the problem is, and what you can change about it, it can seem much clearer.
Social media can also cause overthinking at times. Seeing the success of other people’s lives or various types of news, comparisons with one’s own life are started for no reason. Excessive use of social media, especially when depressed, can exacerbate anxiety. So it is better to stay away from the phone for some time if necessary.Talking to loved ones is also a good way to relax. All problems can seem overwhelming if left alone. Sharing it with someone you trust can often help you see the problem differently. But it’s also important that you feel comfortable talking about yourself to the person you’re talking to.
Another thing to remember is that there is no rule that answers to all thoughts must be found immediately. Some clear up over time. So it is better to give yourself some time instead of thinking all the time until you get an answer about something.
You can also do some simple breathing exercises to reduce overthinking. When you feel like you are overthinking, sit quietly for a while and focus on breathing in and out slowly. Even if you pay attention to your breath for a few minutes, sometimes you can feel a little less busy inside your head. But if the overthinking is so much that it is affecting the daily work, sleep, study or relationship then it is better not to neglect the matter. If such problems persist for a long time, a mental health professional may be consulted. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Rather, it is important to take necessary steps for your own well-being.
